The Turks and Caicos Islands gained its third mobile network, and the first to offer 3G services, last week as Islandcom Wireless staged its official launch. The US$6 million network took place almost a year after it was completed and started testing.

Sandra Garland, Director of Islandcom Wireless said: "I am proud to say that our determination to evolve into the best service provider in the telecommunications industry certainly demonstrates our commitment to the people of our islands. Our shareholders and directors have always been acutely aware that as the only homegrown telecommunications company, we also had to be the best."

The company is a venture in partnership with Bermuda Digital Communication (BTC), a subsidiary of Atlantic TeleNetwork.

In the past year, IslandCom added six new cell sites, and by the end of this year, would have 3G services on 19 sites around the country, including Grand Turk, Provo, North Caicos, Middle Caicos and South Caicos.

The company will be competing against Cable & Wireless subsidiary, LIME and Digicel.
